The mountain region includes the eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains on the east side of the Sierra Nevada Mountain range of California. The desert-like yearly rainfall competes with small streams that drain down from the snow-covered mountains to create barren land with regions of verdant green.
The largest industry in the Eastern Sierra Mountains region is tourism. Lodging and campsites are plentiful. Various activities appeal to travelers. Bridgeport is the County seat of Mono County. It has a classic western courthouse that remains in use since the late 1800s. Lee Vining is the closest town to Mono Lake. Mono Lake has access to Yosemite. Mammoth, known for its ski resort, it is also a good place to stay in the summer when visiting the region. Bishop is the largest town in the Eastern Sierra Nevada Mountain region. It has a hospital, chain stores and excellent climbing and fishing. Independence is home to the Eastern Sierra Museum. Lone Pine is the access point to the Mount Whitney trailhead. It is home to the interagency visitor center for Eastern Sierra & Death Valley.
The Eastern Sierra is loaded with recreational activities. All towns in this region cater to the traveler, so lodging and food are plentiful. Highway US 395 runs from north to south through the entire Eastern Sierra.
